Embark on your data science journey with our comprehensive minor program – a stepping stone for aspiring data scientists. This program provides a strong foundation in the core principles of data science, bridging theory with practical application. You’ll delve into four key areas: analytics, systems (data engineering), design (communications), and value (ethics), gaining a holistic understanding of the field.
The curriculum is designed to be flexible and adaptable to various academic backgrounds. It requires completion of 15 credit hours, strategically divided into five categories. You’ll select one course from each category, with at least three courses (9 credits) specifically in data science (DS). These categories include a foundational programming course, an analytics course, a systems course, a data design or value course, and a domain elective or final project. The Data Science Project Course (DS 4002) offers hands-on experience working with diverse data types.
The foundational programming requirement is non-negotiable and emphasizes practical coding skills. For those who have already demonstrated proficiency, contact SDSMinor@virginia.edu for guidance on course selection. Analytics courses focus on data-driven statistical analysis, while systems courses cover data engineering principles. Data design or value courses examine the ethical and societal implications of data science. Finally, the domain elective allows you to tailor your learning to your specific interests or pursue a capstone project.
Upon completion, you’ll be well-equipped for data-driven careers or advanced studies. This program prepares students from various disciplines, encouraging interdisciplinary exploration. With a blend of technical expertise and ethical awareness, you’ll be ready to make a significant impact in the ever-evolving world of data science.
