The Data Science B.A. at UC Berkeley’s College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) offers a flexible curriculum designed to equip students with the skills to draw sound conclusions from data. The program combines computational and inferential reasoning, covering statistical inference, computational processes, data management, domain knowledge, and ethical considerations.

The major requires fulfilling both lower-division and upper-division requirements, including core courses like DATA C8 and DATA C100. Students also choose a Domain Emphasis—a cluster of courses focusing on a specific area like business analytics, ecology, or neuroscience—to contextualize their data science skills. Sample program plans and worksheets are available to aid in course selection, but individual planning with a Data Science Advisor is strongly recommended.

Transfer students receive dedicated support through Transfer Mentors who assist with scheduling, extracurricular activities, and internship planning. Advisors are available via email (ds-advising@berkeley.edu) or through online advising services. The application process can be completed online.

Beyond the major requirements, the program emphasizes practical application through student teams, internships, and the Data Scholars program for underrepresented students. Peer advisors also provide valuable support to peers in navigating the program.
